LinkCor® Bioengineered Cornea

PictureFigure 1
LinkCor®  is a transparent cell-free bioengineered corneal implant for transplantation (Figure 1A). It can be used as:
  • A full thickness cornea for treatment of corneal blindness caused by diseases and traumas such as keratoconus and corneal scarring.
  • A partial thickness inter-corneal implant for sight correction in patients with low vision.
The cornea is robust with excellent tunable physical and dimensional properties (Fig.1B). LinkCor® implant has been extensively tested for its therapeutic potential in replacing and regenerating the corneas of rabbits (Fig.1C) in a new corneal surgery (femtosecond laser-assisted intra-stromal keratoplasty) developed for the first time in a rabbit model with an intact epithelium by one of our collaborators. Implanted LinkCor® corneas rapidly healed without inflammation or damage to surrounding tissue, while host stromal cells migrated into the implant (Fig. 1D & 1E) and initiated regeneration by producing new collagen (Fig. 1F).
