Despite the high demand of corneal transplant, to date none of the existing artificial corneas on the market meet the gold standard of an implantable corneal construct. Those standards include but are not limited to biocompatibility of the material, good integration into the host tissue, limited probability of being rejected by the patient’s immune system, maintenance of long term clarity, affordability, and implantable by penetrating keratoplasty. In fact, none even come close.
